Investment Philosophy

Our philosophy has been honed from 100+ years of combined experience investing in all economic/market conditions. We know the importance of adapting to rapid change. With multiple strategies, we provide clients the ability to balance between protecting assets and growing them. We do not follow the crowd and conduct our own fundamental research on every investment we make. We believe our clients deserve direct access to the professionals making investment decisions and that they should be able to understand why and how decisions are made.

History of the
Long Bridge

The Long Bridge is a useful metaphor for the investment process. Over time, as conditions change, an investment approach may need to be replaced or improved. Investors must trust in the experience and integrity of their investment manager to create a safe passage to their destination. Their “bridge” must be built with integrity.

With the driving of the first piling in 1908, The Long Bridge in Sandpoint, ID began construction. It was completed in 1910 and was advertised as the longest wooden bridge in the world.  Originally it was referred to as the Wagon Bridge and featured a drawbridge to allow steamboats to pass through. The first bridge lasted for over 20 years and was reconstructed in the 1930’s during the great depression era. It was also constructed of wood and still retained the name of “the longest wooden bridge in the world”.  However, the second version utilized a better design which resulted in a quieter, safer bridge.

The second bridge served the area for 22 years, but a replacement was required. A third bridge was built in 1956 using an advanced design, built with steel and concrete. The third bridge cost $12 million, a significant increase from the $20 thousand cost for the original bridge, reflecting the real cost of inflation over time.

The fourth and final bridge (so far) was built in 1981, once again using advanced materials and design. And today it still performs its original purpose of spanning the Pend Oreille River and safely delivering people to their destination.
